Local Attractions

Tamborine Mountain Glow Worm Caves

At the top of Tamborine Mountain, at Cedar Creek Estate Winery, you’ll find the Tamborine Mountain Glow Worm Caves. The purpose-built cave, the only one of its kind, is impressive and easy to access and even replicates a real cave with formations such as stalagmites and stalactites! As a privately owned sanctuary (not a national park) it is the only place in Queensland to see glow worms during the day, and the only sanctuary in the world.

Each tour takes approximately 30 minutes and runs daily between 10am – 4pm (except Good Friday and Christmas day) by an experienced and highly qualified guide. For the protection of the glow worm conservation program, you cannot explore the cave on your own, but because it is undercover and protected you can visit all year round.

The Tamborine Mountain Glow Worm Caves is approximately a 20-minute drive from the Canungra Hotel, and you can book online to save time and a few dollars.

Wineries & Vineyards

Part of the fun of a vacation is fuelling up either before or after your adventures, so naturally eating and drinking in the valley should be high on your list of priorities!

When visiting the locale of Canungra, why not spend some time sampling our small, but growing wine industry, where tastings aren’t the only delights you can experience when visiting the local wineries.

Although Canungra Valley is an ideal destination for a day trip, the vineyards themselves, such as O’Reilly’s, have an extensive calendar of events and experiences such as wine appreciation lunches, wine launches and tastings, so it’s definitely worth checking out what’s on when you are going to be in town.

You’ll find O’Reilly’s Canungra Valley Vineyards on Lamington National Park Road, open 7 days a week with a cellar door open daily from 10am – 4pm and local musicians playing on the weekends. At O’Reilly’s you are able to take a walk through the lush vineyard grounds, but also spend time feeding the alpacas, as the Mountview Alpaca Farm is located on the property.

Wedding Chapels & Churches

Being located in the beautiful Scenic Rim in Queensland, Canungra Valley offers some of the most beautiful outdoor settings to celebrate your nuptials with loved ones. Many people take advantage of the outdoors, however, if you’d like a more traditional approach to your special day, there are a number of gorgeous intimate chapels to consider before partying the night away with us at Canungra Hotel.

In the heart of Canungra, St Margaret Mary’s Catholic Church was officially opened in 1934 by Archbishop Duhig. Before the church was built, Mass was actually held within the private homes of residents and then the School of Arts once the congregation became too big.

Located on the corner of Kidston Street and King Street, it’s just down the road from our hotel.

Additional Options for church nuptials in the area include the Canungra Uniting Church – which is a congregation for the Uniting Church of Australia; or St. Luke’s – which is the Anglican Church in Canungra also located on Kidston Street, and has been welcoming the congregation in town since 1936.

Lamington National Park

A visitor highlight of the area would have to be O’Reilly’s Rainforest Tree Top Walk – approximately 15 metres above the rainforest floor. Take a walk along suspension bridges for 180 metres whilst you spot the flora and fauna along the trail, plus don’t forget to look for the birds and other animals that reside in the treetops. Along the walkway are profiles to help with identifying what you can see and although there is no age or height restriction to walk the bridges, adult supervision is highly recommended, especially during the climbing aspect of the walk. You will be able to walk through the flowering and fruiting trees to climb to the two observation decks constructed in a Strangler Fig, the highest one being approximately 30 metres above the ground.

A drive to the National Park from Canungra Hotel will take around half an hour, depending on which area of the park you are visiting.

Lahey Tramway Tunnel

Now known as the Lahey Tramway Tunnel, it was reopened to pedestrians in 2001 and added to the Queensland Heritage Register on April 11, 2005. Due to safety concerns, you can now only walk a short distance to the opening of the tramway, but the hike itself to explore the tunnel is a popular attraction for train enthusiasts to the area. As far as walking trails go, it is only a short distance of approximately 1km and should take around 45 minutes to complete.

Parking is available on Darlington Range Road, close to Pine Street and once you’ve finished, we’ll have a cold beverage waiting for you at the Canungra Hotel!

Canungra Creek

Visitors to the Scenic Rim region can participate in some outdoor recreation on the water with three lakes, all popular for boating, water skiing, fishing and rowing within the area including:

If you’re taking a day trip to the National Park, visitors can spend a few hours exploring the area known as the West Canungra Creek Circuit in the Green Mountains section of Lamington Park; a 14km hike which features creeks, cascades, waterfalls and pools. This part of the track is easy to follow and will give you access to some beautiful views of lush rainforest and take you past Darraboola Falls to Yerralahla Pool. Just be mindful that although the water looks inviting, avoid swimming here because of the large eels that come to the water’s edge and say hello when they hear you coming!

Canungra Village Markets

On the second Sunday of each month (their Facebook or Instagram page will keep you updated), locals and visitors alike can head to Moriarty Park for the Canungra Village Markets. Founded all the way back in May 2013, the markets were established by a community of local producers as somewhere to showcase their talents, and treats, for the region. There is a long line up of stalls with homemade and handmade goods so it’s well worth a visit if you’re in the area when they are on.

  • Beaudesert Markets – 1st Saturday each month
  • Tamborine Village Lions Community Markets – 1st Sunday each month
  • Canungra Village Markets – 2nd Sunday each month
  • Beechmont Country Markets – 3rd Sunday each month
  • Boonah Country Markets – 4th Sunday each month
